How Much Does House Cleaning Cost in Harrisburg, PA

Four things set the number, and none of them is the one most companies quote on.

Negreiro Cleaning Services LLC

You will notice this page does not print a rate, and neither does the rest of this site. That is deliberate. A number published without seeing your home is a number that changes later, and a number that changes later is the single most common complaint people have about cleaning companies.

What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the price, so that when two quotes land in your inbox you can see why they differ and which one is describing your actual house.

The Four Things That Set the Price

In roughly the order they matter.

How many bathrooms. This surprises people, because square footage is what gets asked about first. A bathroom carries more cleaning work per square foot than any other room in a house, so two homes with the same floor area and different bathroom counts are different jobs. In the newer developments around Mechanicsburg and the larger homes in Camp Hill, this is usually the difference between a half day and a full one.

The size of the home, which matters, but less on its own than people expect. Layout is part of it: stairs, landings, split levels, finished basements, and bonus rooms all add work that a listing square footage does not describe.

The condition it is in when the cleaner arrives. This is the honest one and the one nobody likes asking about. A house cleaned three months ago and a house that has not had a real clean in three years get the same checklist and nowhere near the same number of hours.

How often they come back. Recurring visits cost less per visit than a one time clean, because a home on a schedule never builds back up the same way. Weekly, every two weeks, and monthly are three different jobs in the same house and they are priced as three different jobs.

Why a Per Square Foot Rate Misleads You

It is an appealing idea. One number, times your floor area, done. It falls apart the moment you compare two real houses.

A Midtown rowhome with one bathroom, three narrow floors, radiators under every window, plaster walls, and original woodwork is not the same work as a ranch of the same square footage in Colonial Park with two and a half bathrooms and a sliding door.

Neither is a four bedroom where two of the bedrooms are used for storage and nobody has opened the blinds in a year the same as a four bedroom where four people live.

A per square foot rate has to assume an average condition, an average layout, and an average number of bathrooms. If your house is average in all three, it will be close. If it is not, somebody is losing, and the company will not be the one that loses twice.

We wrote more about what old housing stock adds to a job on the Harrisburg page, because in this city it is most of the difference.

One Time, First Time, and Recurring Are Three Prices

A one time clean is priced on its own, and it is the most expensive per visit, because it carries all of the catch up and none of the benefit of a schedule.

A first visit on a new recurring client is usually a deep clean, priced higher than the visits after it, because it is doing work that will not need doing again for a long time.

Recurring visits after that are the lowest per visit, and the more often they happen the lower each one gets. Weekly visits are shorter than monthly ones in the same house, because a week of living is a smaller job than a month of it.

If a company quotes you the same figure for all three, ask which one they have actually planned for.

What Sits Outside the Standard Price

Inside the oven, inside the fridge, and inside the cabinets are add ons on a regular clean. On a move out or a move in clean they are part of the standard list, because those are the jobs where somebody opens them.

Interior windows, baseboards that need stripping back rather than wiping, laundry, and the basement are the other common ones.

Pets are not an upcharge for having a pet, they are time. Hair works into carpet edges, sofa seams, and vent covers, and a company that does not ask about pets has not planned for that time.

The right time to name every add on you want is before the estimate, not on the day. It is the difference between a price and a surprise.

How to Compare Two Quotes Fairly

Five questions that make two numbers comparable.

Did they see the house? A quote given over the phone is an estimate of an average house, not of yours.

What does the list actually name? If one quote says baseboards, door frames, light fixtures, and grout, and the other says kitchen and bathrooms, you are not comparing two prices for one job. You are comparing two jobs.

How many hours are they planning? A number without hours behind it cannot be checked. If two quotes are close and one plans three hours while the other plans six, one of them is wrong about your house.

Who is coming, and is it the same people next time? A lower price with a rotating crew means somebody new learns your house on your time, repeatedly.

Is it in writing? Verbal numbers drift. A written estimate is a number somebody has to stand behind.

What a Written Estimate Should Tell You

The price, obviously, and what kind of clean it is for. Deep, standard, move out, and move in are different jobs and the estimate should say which one it covers.

How long they expect to be there, so you can plan your day and so the number can be sanity checked.

Which add ons are included and which are not.

What happens if the house turns out to be substantially different from what the estimate was based on. Ours is that we talk to you before doing the work rather than changing the price afterwards.

Ours also says nothing gets added to the number after the fact, and we take cash, check, and Zelle. No deposit is taken to hold a date and no card is kept on file.

Cost Questions We Get Asked in Harrisburg

How much does house cleaning cost in Harrisburg, PA?

Four things drive the price: the square footage of the home, how many bathrooms it has, the condition it is in when we arrive, and how often you want us back. A first deep clean on a home that has not had one in a while takes longer than a repeat visit, so it costs more. Recurring visits cost less per visit than a one time clean. We look at the home, ask what matters to you, and send a written estimate. The estimate is free and there is no charge to come look.

Why will you not give me a price over the phone?

Because a number given without seeing the home is a guess about its condition, and condition is one of the four things that sets the price. A guess that turns out low becomes a conversation on the day about charging you more, and we would rather not have that conversation with anybody.

Is recurring cleaning cheaper than a one time clean?

Yes. Recurring visits cost less per visit than a one time clean, because a home that is cleaned on a schedule never builds up the same way. Weekly, every two weeks, and monthly are each priced differently, and the written estimate tells you the per visit price before you commit to anything.

Should I tip a house cleaner?

It is never expected and it is always appreciated. Nobody at this company will treat you differently either way, and the price on the estimate is the price of the work.

Want a number for your actual house?

We look at the home and send a written price with the hours behind it. Free, and nothing is owed either way.
